HP Projects
Technologically Expanding Bridges of Opportunity

Context: Higher Education
Disciplines/Subject Areas : Engineering Design and Technology, ICT, Engineering Mathematics and Physics

3 of Esayidi FET’s 5 campuses are dedicated to encouraging and building scarce skills required in South Africa, namely in the fields of electrical, construction, engineering and IT.  Our challenge, with the assistance of HP mobile technology, is to introduce these fields of technology to students, many of whom do not have potable water or electricity in their homes let alone access to computers and other forms of modern technology.

Changes to Instruction from HP Grant

Many students who enter Esayidi have had little or no technological or engineering interaction.  Their Maths and Physics is basic and concepts poorly understood. Interactive software such as sticky notes , crocodile–clips, and AutoCAD combined with the powerful  HP Elite Book Tablet and interactive whiteboards allows students to be instructed  in a “virtual and highly interactive”  manner at a fraction of the cost of the actual machinery and equipment.

Measurement Methods Used

Students entering programmes offered by FET colleges have to build
Portfolios of  Evidence.  Students undergo continuous formative
assessments throughout the year as well as summative and integrated assessments. These results are entered into the students POE’s and assessors Portfolio of Assessment thus allowing the facilitator and the Project Team to monitor the impact of the HP project on the student.

Key Outcomes and Evidence

The key outcomes will be to improve the students understanding in the fields of Maths, Physics, Engineering Design and Technology and IT.  The evidence will be in the improvement to the students pass rate  in these fields, culminating in a well rounded individual who can competently enter the world of industry.
